Employers hire accountants they can trust with accuracy and deadlines. Show your areas of expertise, the systems you use and how you improved processes.
How to write a accountant resume
Recruiters spend only a few seconds on the first read, so put the most relevant information at the top: your job title, a short profile and your most recent role. Use the reverse-chronological order (latest job first) and keep it to one page if you have less than ten years of experience.
Writing your profile summary
State your years of experience, specialisation (reporting, tax, audit) and a strength such as accuracy or speed. Keep it to two to four sentences and adapt it to each job advert.
Describing your experience
Start every bullet point with an action verb and, where you can, add a number: how many, how much, how fast. Results (“reduced waiting times by 20%”) are more convincing than duties (“responsible for the queue”).
Key skills for a accountant
- Financial reporting and statements
- General ledger and reconciliations
- Tax and VAT compliance
- Budgeting and forecasting
- ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, others)
- Advanced Excel
- Attention to detail
Mix hard skills (tools, methods, certifications) with a few soft skills, and use the same words as the job advert — applicant tracking systems look for them.
Tips to stand out
- Add professional qualifications (ACCA, CECCAR, CPA) prominently.
- Mention the size of companies and number of entities you handled.
- Show process improvements: faster close, automation, fewer errors.
- Name the accounting standards you work with (IFRS, local GAAP).
